Barcelona, November 30, 2016 – Scytl, the worldwide leader in secure online voting and election modernization, today announced the successful deployment of its online voting technology in the Canton of Fribourg, benefiting its citizens with the accessibility, privacy, security and verifiability that online voting provides. This new deployment of Scytl technology was co-developed with and deployed by Swiss Post and has provided a state-of-the-art solution that covers all the unique requirements of the Swiss voting system.
As part of its initiative to modernize the local Chancellery, the Canton on Fribourg has taken the first step in delivering more efficient election and referendum processes by allowing its overseas citizens to cast their ballots online. This is only the first step in their vision to allow all its citizens to benefit from online voting. With 41.8% of votes for the Cantonal Election and 34% of the votes for the Federal Vote received online, it is clear that the uptake of the online channel for overseas voters has been a success.
“We are extremely proud to be helping drive technology innovation in Switzerland and to witness the benefits it provides its citizens. The use of Scytl technology is helping us deliver an online voting platform that provides the industry’s most advanced security and verifiability protocols that will enable Cantons who wish to offer their citizens online voting for elections and citizen consultations,” says Claudia Pletscher, Head of Innovation & Development at Swiss Post.
The online voting solution deployed for the November Federal Vote and Cantonal Elections, authorized by the Swiss Federal Council in September 2016, represents a significant leap forward in security standards and new verifiability protocols for the canton versus solutions used in the past:
- The system delivers full privacy and vote integrity by ensuring the vote is encrypted and digitally signed on the voter’s device and remains so until the tally process, guaranteeing that votes cannot be “read” or “opened” until the ballot box is opened by the electoral commission.
- In addition, the platform provides voting and election integrity proofs and individual verifiability protocols that allow voters to check for themselves that the encrypted votes received by the voting system contain their vote intention without decrypting the vote and guaranteeing full voter privacy.
