In an effort to offer alternative and innovative voting channels that would help increase accessibility for some population groups, such as voters with disabilities or expatriates, the Norwegian Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development conducted online voting pilot projects in 2011 and 2013 using Scytl’s technology.
During these pilot projects, 418,000 voters in 28 municipalities had the option to cast their vote online as an alternative voting channel during the early voting period in the parliamentary elections.
Norway’s online voting received wide international recognition for the use of a verifiable cryptographic voting protocol, which allowed third parties to conduct detailed audits of the voting process and the vote.
The online voting technology and security provided by Scytl ensured that the pilot projects in Norway were at the forefront of the most secure digital elections ever implemented.
